The ALA's Newbery winner this year is New Kid by Jerry Craft. This medal is awarded "for the most outstanding contribution to children's literature." This is a graphic novel.
The 2020 Caldecott Medal goes to "the most distinguished American picture book for children." This year's Caldecott winner is The Undefeated, written by Kwame Alexander and illustrated by Kadir Nelson. Previous winners can be found here. Alexander and Nelson, in my opinion, are first-rate and their numerous medal and honor books are well deserved.
These two books were also this year's Coretta Scott King Award winners. The King awards are given to recognize "African-American authors and illustrators of outstanding books for children and young adults." Winners, and they and the runners up, listed here, have included some excellent books over the years.
The Newbery honor books for 2020 are:
The Undefeated, written by Kwame Alexander, illustrated by Kadir Nelson. It is not uncommon in recent years for the same books to be chosen as Newbery and Caldecott winners and honor books and also King winners. Other medal winners in 2020 are: Scary Stories for Young Foxes, written by Christian McKay Heidicker, illustrated by Junyi Wu; Other Words for Home, written by Jasmine Warga; and Genesis Begins Again, written by Alicia D. Williams.
The Caldecott honor books this year are:
Bear Came Along, illustrated by LeUyen Pham, written by Richard T. Morris; Double Bass Blues, illustrated by Rudy Gutierrez, written by Andrea J. Loney; and Going Down Home with Daddy, illustrated by Daniel Minter, written by Kelly Starling Lyons.
