I think I have read about 8 of them. I can't believe that he singled out Maugham's Ashenden. I found it tedious and not even close to the brilliance of his more famous works.

I wonder why Orwell chose Ashenden for his friend to read rather than the better known novels. The list is interesting in part for the questions it raises.

His take: Wodehouse was a nitwit and not a traitor when he did radio broadcasts for the Germans during WWII.
