The other night I was wandering around the Internet Movie Database when I discovered there was a set of four DVDs, 12 episodes, of Maigret with Michael Gambon in the title role. Alas Netflix doesn't have it.
So I took a chance and bought the set. We have watched the first episode and it's spectacularly good. Except that the buildings have been cleaned, which would not have been the case in the early 50s, when the action purportedly takes place, they have the rest of it absolutely perfect. The clothes, the waiters, the cafes, the vehicles. I lived in Paris about 10 years later and even then it was still "post-war" with nothing like today's vibrant street life. This series catches the ambiance perfectly.
